Over the years, the NFC West rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks has been must-see TV. Although the overall rivalry has been relatively even, with the Seahawks having won 25 of their 41 meetings, most of the recent meetings have been between decent to woeful teams despite dynasty-esque powerhouses in the early years of this decade. However, this year marks a new chapter in this previously legendary rivalry as the Seahawks(7-2) visit the 49ers(8-0) on Monday Night Football under the brightest lights of the week.
Entering into the week, the 49ers are leading the NFC and all of football with arguably the best defensive front in the league while the Seahawks are boasting formidable passing and running games. Thus far, the 49ers have locked down nearly every team they’ve played utilizing their MVP level defensive end, Nick Bosa. However, the 1 team the 49ers were unable to corral was the Arizona Cardinals, another division rivals the 49ers have struggled against in the past. Moreover, this Seahawks team has an explosive 2-way offense comparable, if not better, than that of the Cardinals. This high-powered offense will likely be the 1st major test to a seemingly insurmountable 49ers defense.
Despite the many, reasonable arguments being made for both teams, a verdict has to be reached; And for me, the consensus is San Francisco 24 - 28 Seattle Seahawks. Although the 49ers defense has been stellar thus far, they did show signs of weakness that will likely be exploited by Super Bowl winning head coach Pete Carroll. In all, I predict that the Seahawks offense will prove too much for a 49ers team that is at times unable to move the ball at all with its own offense.
